For the second straight season, Marshalltown's Martin Chavarria is an all-state soccer player.
The Bobcat senior landed on the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association's Class 3A all-state second team Saturday after tallying nine goals and eight assists for Marshalltown.
Chavarria also was a second-teamer last year when the Bobcat tallied 18 goals and nine assists and led the program to one of the best seasons in school history at 16-3.
Chavarria, a future Marshalltown Community College Tiger, scored 21 goals and had three assists as a sophomore and collected a career-best 24 goals and six assists as a freshman in 2011.
The Bobcats ended this season at 14-5 but lost their final three matches, including a 3-1 loss to Southeast Polk in the semifinals of the substate round.
Five players from the Central Iowa Metropolitan League landed on the first team, including Johnston's Elvir Obisevic and Sam Graving, Waukee's Isaac Bruns, Ames' Tomas Lence and West Des Moines Valley's Jordan Lucas.
Joining Chavarria on the second team were Dowling Catholic's Tom Bowman, Waukee's Alex Herrera and Adam Novak, Johnston's Luke Johnson and Valley's Addison Parrish. Southeast Polk goalkeeper Carter Wright also was an honorable mention selection.
Top-ranked Johnston (21-0) will try to complete an undefeated season Tuesday when the Dragons face third-ranked Iowa City West in the 3A championship match. Ames and Valley also advanced to the state tournament but both lost in the quarterfinals.
Rain postponed all three championship matches Saturday and all three classes will make up the finals Tuesday beginning with the Class 1A at 12:05 p.m. The 2A final is at 2:30 p.m. and the Johnston-Iowa City West championship tilt will begin at 5 p.m.
