SIOUX CITY - A 50-foot electric guitar is about to join the Sioux City skyline.
The Sioux City Journal reported workers on Monday began to assemble the guitar-shaped sign that will be placed atop the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
The operation is expected to open Aug. 1.
Hard Rock General Manager Todd Moyer said the guitar body will be connected with the Hard Rock logo and guitar neck as the sign is mounted on the roof of the four-story Battery Building. A crane will be used to lift the sign into place Thursday.
Officials were planning a ceremony Thursday night when they light the sign for the first time.
The sign will be visible for miles and will be easily spotted by motorists on Interstate 29.
It will be placed at about a 60 degree angle, or the angle at which a giant musician would hold the guitar.
Sioux City Entertainment, which is developing the hotel and casino, initially planned to place the sign on top of the Battery Building's six-story clock tower, but engineers determined the tower wouldn't support the weight.
The $128.5 million downtown casino and hotel will employ about 500 people.
