Something borrowed, something new.
A Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA raffle meets the test for both from the English bridal rhyme. It is all in good fun, and designed to support Y scholarships for area children and families in need.
Fittingly, it is called the Mystery Drop Raffle, and it was borrowed from the Montgomery County YMCA-YWCA in Red Oak, and it is a new fundraiser for the local Y's Partnership with Youth campaign, said Bianca Greazel, Y development director.
Greazel said the fundraiser has been successful at the Montgomery County Y, so she and her team were anxious to give it a try.
And to boot, the Y will use the fun and excitement of Central Iowa Fair as backdrop to determine the raffle's winners at 5:30 p.m. July 10.
"The Central Iowa Fair board of directors has been a pleasure to work with, especially member Jodi Breniman," said Greazel.

A limited number of tickets at $100 per chance are available, with a whopping $4,000 grand prize and $1,000 for the runner-up.
It works this way: Greazel and her team will lay out a grid of squares at the fairgrounds with a duplicate of a purchased chance in each square. A large animal's manure dropping in a square will determine the $4,000 winner.
A small animal's dropping in a square will determine the $1,000 winner.
Need not be present to win.
However, it is worth an extra $250 bonus if present for either prize, said Greazel.
There is still time to buy chances, but the deadline is 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Greazel said there have been a range of methods used when purchasing chances.
"We've had people buy one ticket, ranging to employees at some businesses combining resources and buying blocks of tickets," she said.
Regardless of one buying one or a group buying a block of chances, the real winners are the children and families who are awarded scholarships from the Partnership with Youth fund.
"The fund enables those individuals and families who can prove financial need an opportunity to become members of the Y," Greazel said. "We know from testimonials that a Y membership can make a significant difference in a individual's or family's life. We've helped a number of at risk kids with scholarships, and educators and others who interact with the them have noted improvement in behavior and grades. We believe strongly that no one should lack a Y membership because of lack of resources."
Assisting Greazel with the raffle are co-workers Sue Fehrmann, health and wellness coordinator, Carol Hibbs, CEO, Keisha Lockhart, health and wellness assistant, and Angie Paxson, health and wellness director.
Other Y volunteers are helping the committee sell raffle tickets.
