The coffee shop at the Orpheum Theater has been vacant for nearly four months now, after the Morning Glory Bakery left in the middle of three-year lease at the end of March.
Chris Duree, chancellor of the Iowa Valley Community College District which runs the Orpheum, said a first wave of request for proposals to lease and operate the shop was not successful. "We're disappointed we didn't have much response on the RFP," Duree said.
The Orpheum underwent a taxpayer-funded $3 million renovation several years ago. The college district initially operated the coffee shop for several years before deciding to lease it out as a way to save money as it was not generating the expected revenue.

The coffee shop at the Orpheum Theater has been vacant for nearly four months. Leaders with the Iowa Valley Community College District continue to look at ways to get the shop back open again with a new vendor.
Duree said the college district will try another round of request for proposals to "cast a bigger net" to try to land someone to operate the facility and they also are doing some strategic planning on the facility. He said the shop is not closed for good and they continue to be in talks to reopen it with a different operator.
"We're just waiting for a viable candidate to step forward," Duree said. "We fully intend to keep looking."
