A local official will be part of a dialogue series discussion on immigration in Des Moines next week.
Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper will be a panelist for the Iowa International Center Dialogue Series discussion regarding the issue of granting driver's licenses to unauthorized immigrants, from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Des Moines Central Library.
Tupper will join Lori Chesser, Des Moines attorney and Sarah Hendricks, a sociology professor at Drake University to discuss the topic.
"I think when we are talking about legislative issues and problems facing our community, it's always good to engage in open dialogue," Tupper said. "I'm sure there will be a lot of constructive comments and questions. I think it will be an educational event. I encourage anybody from the Marshall County area that wants to learn more to come and attend."
The event is a free program.
Tupper was asked by the Iowa International Center Dialogue Series coordinators to be a panelist. He added he took a vacation day in order to be a panelist and the city is not paying him to be part of the discussion group.
