Pictured is a Missy Sharer-Pieters’ designed and painted work in front of the Agriculture Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds Tuesday. Entitled “Iowa, Amazingly Amusing,” Sharer-Pieters of Laurel won first place in the professional category for the second consecutive year.
Professional and amateur artists throughout the state were invited by the fair board to design and paint a 350-pound Iowa map made of concrete using the 2014 fair theme “Amazingly Amusing.” The back depicts an Iowa cornfield and barn.
It was the fourth consecutive year Sharer-Pieters painted a concrete object d’ art in the professional division. In 2011, it was a butter cow replica, in 2012, an ice cream cone, and last year, a 200-pound blue ribbon. Sharer-Pieters won second place in 2012, and fourth place in 2011.
The artist, businesswoman, graphic designer and coach, who has owned and operated Messy-Missy’s Studio in Marshalltown for 10 years, acknowledged she couldn’t compete without help from customers, family, friends, sponsors and Meadow Lane Mall businesses. The Cabinet Shoppe of Marshalltown sponsored Sharer-Pieters effort this year.
