Michael Appel has returned to Marshalltown Community College. Only this time, he will step onto the basketball court as an assistant coach.
The MCC Tiger athletic department announced Tuesday that Appel has joined the MCC men's basketball staff and will serve under head coach Brynjar Brynjarsson.
Appel is a graduate of Marshalltown High School and played for Brynjarsson at MCC from 2009-2011.
"Michael is a great addition to our staff," said Brynjarsson. "Michael has tremendous pride as a Tiger from his playing days here and from being a local product. Michael understands our philosophy at MCC and has a great perspective of the game. He'll be a tremendous asset in helping our student-athletes mature and grow, just as he did here at Marshalltown."
During his playing days at MCC, Appel set the school record for consecutive 3-pointers made in a game when he buried eight straight against conference rival Southeastern Community College.
Appel was a two-time honorable mention all-Iowa Community College Athletic Conference selection and also played at Southwest Minnesota State University, an NCAA Divison II school, and appeared in 19 games for the Mustangs.
"I'm excited to get back to Marshalltown," stated Appel. "I've always had a great passion for the Tigers, even after my playing days. I'm looking forward to being on the other side of things now."
Appel played his four years at MHS under former coach Ron Ginapp, who will be starting his fourth year under Brynjarsson at MCC.
"I learned a lot from coach Ginapp at the high school level and coach Brynjarsson at the collegiate level," Appel said. "I'm excited to soak up more knowledge about the game from two great coaches."
Appel is working towards the completion of a degree in physical education with a special needs minor and is currently student teaching in the West Marshall school district.
