SPORTS SHORTS: Tigers fall to Falcons in district opener
PARKERSBURG — The South Hardin baseball team lost in the first round of the Class 2A District 13 Tournament to Aplington-Parkersburg on Saturday, 8-0.
Cade Spieker took the loss for the Tigers (2-16) while going 6 2/3 innings, and Jacob Vander Wilt pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Alec Oberhauser earned the win for the Falcons (20-7), allowing three hits and striking out seven in five innings pitched. Carter Cuvelier struck out six straight to close out the win for A-P.
Dante Dolash had a double for South Hardin for the team’s only extra-base hit.
Rebels end regular season with a win
JACKSON JUNCTION — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a 6-3 win over Turkey Valley on Friday.
Caden Kickbush earned the win for the Rebels (19-10), allowing five hits and three runs in a complete-game effort while striking out six and walking none.
Kickbush also went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Mason Skovgard went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Tyler Tscherter went 1-for-3 with two runs.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck starts the Class 1A District 5 tournament on Tuesday when it hosts Rockford, starting at 7 p.m.
Royals fall host Cubs in Nevada, 6-3
NEVADA — The Colo-NESCO baseball team lost a non-conference game to Nevada on Friday, 6-3, to finish the regular season.
Kelly Gray took the loss for the Royals (11-11), allowing seven hits and four earned runs in five innings while striking out two and walking two.
Ryan Banks finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI at the plate, while Gray went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.
Colo-NESCO starts the Class 1A District 12 Tournament on Tuesday with a game against Ankeny Christian Academy in St. Marys, starting at 5 p.m.
AGWSR baseball team blasts Baxter
BAXTER — The AGWSR baseball team wrapped up the regular season on Thursday with a 13-2 win over Baxter.
Josh Bartling picked up the victory for the Cougars (12-4), allowing six hits and one run in six innings of work while striking out six and walking two.
Brody Roder went 4-for-4 with a double and five RBIs, while Liam Stubbe finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
AGWSR starts the Class 1A District 5 Tournament on Tuesday with a game against North Butler in Reinbeck, starting at 5 p.m.
Don Bosco knocks off Trojans, 6-4
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team lost a non-conference game to Don Bosco on Thursday, 6-4.
Cameron Bannister was the losing pitcher for the Trojans (19-12), though he only went two innings in the loss. Bannister, Nat Markle, Brayden Evertsen and Alex Dickey all combined to throw 155 pitches, and they allowed a combined nine hits, five earned runs and struck out seven.
Parker Hulbert 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Bannister finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Redhawks close by clobbering CAL
TRAER — The North Tama baseball team ended its regular season with a 15-5 win over CAL in six innings on Thursday.
Lance Zobel earned the victory for the Redhawks (15-9), allowing just one hit and no runs in 6 2/3 innings of work while striking out nine.
Tate Payne finished 3-for-3 with three runs, three stolen bases and an RBI, while Hale Hulme, Skyler Staker, Gabe Kopriva and Zobel all finished 2-for-4.
North Tama starts the Class 1A District 6 Tournament on Tuesday with a game against Dunkerton in Alburnet, starting at 5 p.m.
Tscherter’s two-hitter powers Rebels
MARENGO — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team beat Iowa Valley on Thursday in a non-conference game, 7-0.
Tyler Tscherter pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the Rebels (18-10), striking out nine and walking one in the process.
Mason Skovgard went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Tscherter, Walker Thede and Bronson Wrage all went 2-for-4 in the win.
Tigerhawks take down Colo-NESCO
COLFAX — The Colo-NESCO baseball team lost to Colfax-Mingo on Thursday, 9-2.
Bryce Niemeyer took the loss for the Royals (11-10), going 4 2/3 innings while allowing eight hits and four earned runs and walking seven.
Matthew Hill had the only hit of the night for Colo-NESCO, driving in a run in the fifth inning.
