North Tama’s Blaire and Brooke Dinsdale and South Tama’s Blake Nelson left their respective fields in the dust at the BCLUW Comets Cross Country Invitational as they won the individual titles. Blaire came in first at 14:35, Brooke, second, at 14:37 and Nelson first with a time of 17:29.

A late rally in the second game helped ignite the BCL-U-W girls as they took the last three of four games winning 15-13, 17-15 and 15-13 over Grundy Center as Jane Smith, Shannan Kadner and Cherilyn Kruse led the Comets to victory.

Brian Salasek scored two touchdowns and Mark Halverson one as LDF blanked Garwin 20-0 with Salasek totaling 180 yards in 20 carries.

Jeff Stichter set a new MHS record with 40.8 points scored in the 106.95-91.15 defeat of defending champion Linn-Mar as he took firsts in floor exercise, rings and high bar and seconds in vault and bars in the gymnastics meet.

MHS girls swim team rallied past Ames 99-87 as the 100 backstroke proved to be the key race and Meredith Johnson had been under the weather, but that didn’t stop her from winning it in a time of 1:05:29.

The Bobcats were 3-0 for the season after the 20-17 victory over Urbandale as Joe Huff’s fourth down reception capped a 74-yard drive with 39 seconds remaining on the clock for the go ahead score.

MHS football players opened conference play with a 7-2 win over Waterloo East as Emmett Huston scored on a 41-yard run.

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball squad bounced back from an earlier loss to defeat Ellsworth Community College 30-18, 30-26 and 30-21 as the Tigers were led by Jessica Lopez, Michelle Elliott and Abby Horbach.

Emily Bradbury and Lindsey Ingleby, co-editors of the Cat Tracks, Anson Middle School’s newspaper, helped clean up trash along three miles of Highway 330 with the rest of the newspaper staff.

Herbie Wilson, 13, had a fine fishing adventure with his friend Roger Faber, 12, as he caught a 11.5 pound channel catfish at Twin Anchors, Colo, and Faber caught a 4.5 pounder.

Gavin Simatovich and Rachel McCahuey were crowned Litt Miss and Mister Oktemberfest on the grounds of the Marshall County Courthouse.

The MHS girls swim team won their own invitational with 496 points while winning nine of the 12 events against Ames, Ottumwa, Ankeny, Linn-Mar, Boone and Williamsburg.

The Green Mountain baseball team clubbed Collins 9-1 as Paul Krough struck out eight and Bob Hessenius, Steve Groth and Tim Odle led the offense with two hits each.
