The No. 14 ranked Marshalltown High School volleyball team swept Mason City 25-15, 25-18 and 25-19 as Mehlon Maxwell led the Bobcats with four aces while serving 11-for-11 and Courtney Simons went 12-for-13 and three aces.

The MHS football team fell together to beat No. 9 ranked Fort Dodge 22-6 as Dale Evans led the rushers with 111 yards on 15 carries and Steve Devanney went 76 yards on three passes.

West Marshall volleyball defeated South Hardin 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 and 30-28 as Jordan Weitzell led the Trojans with 15 kills and 19-for-19 serves with one ace and Taylor Davis led 13-for-13 serving with two aces and a team-high 16 assists.

The No. 4 ranked MHS girls swim team edged No. 8 ranked Ottumwa 92-78 as the 200 yard medley team of Susan Miriovsky, Emily Ward, Heather Rouse and Katie Bloom kicked things off with a first place finish, the first of three for Rouse as she took first in the 50-yard free style and the 100 yd. breaststroke.

GMG Homecoming Court for 2009 consisted of King Ben Krull and Queen Libby Carter and their court Wyatt Kaiser, Jacob Hlas, Joe Barloon, Will Worden, Jami Boege, Jaleen Freiberg, Jodie Landt, Shayna Bollehoefer and Brayden Anderson, Emma Reed and Payson Gillespie as the crown bearers and football carrier.

No. 8 ranked GMG edged past Hubbard-Radcliffe 20-13 as Ryan Schulte ended the night with 138 yards on the ground on 24 carries while Jason Benson accounted for 14 tackles and Sam Slingluff 11 tackles and a blocked punt.

Marcia Mann and Karen Clark helped MHS cross country runners to a second place finish at the Ankeny Girls Cross Country Invitational as Mann came in third and Clark, sixth.

East Marshall cross country boys had seven runners int he top 20 spots to take the South Hamilton Cross Country Invite as Trent Harem finished seventh, Brandon Pals, 10th, Connor Dilger, 14th, Carsen Kuesal, 15th, Lance Steward, 16th, Michael Shippy, 18th and Nick Huisman, 20th.

MHS football players dominated Ankeny 24-10 as Tony Elchenseer ran for 160 yards on 26 carries for one touchdown and John Smaha received 79 yards on two passes for one touchdown as Craig Swanson added the other four touchdowns for the night.

Connie Kearney, of Garwin, a member of the Carlton Merry Maids 4-H club won a blue ribbon in the poles out of 90 entries at a horse show at Ak-Sar-Ben and a blue ribbon in barrels out of 135 entries.

MHS girls swim team brought home gold in three events in the Johnston Invitational as Meredith Johnson won both the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yd. free as well as the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 24:52, the fastest in the state that fall.

St. Mary’s sixth graders represented by: Ryan Miller, Allyson Reed, Jarod Wall and Lindsey Husak, held an open hour/bake sale and divided the profits between Tyler Goings, a Hoglan fourth grader burned in a campfire accident over the summer and a former St. Mary student Lisa Thinhouse in need of a lung transplant.

Shelby Dailey, of Colo-Nesco, in a time of 16 minutes , 42 seconds finished second at the Heart of Iowa Conference Meet as the team took a third place finish.

No. 7 ranked MHS girls’ volleyball team clinched the conference title in a three-game sweep of West Des Moines Valley 15-5, 15-10 and 15-7 to put them at 6-0 for the Central Iowa Metro League National Conference as Bobcat serving was outstanding with Julie Schutt going 16-for-16 and Sarah Eads finishing 14-for-14.

MHS senior Renae Weidner was crowned the 1979 MHS Homecoming queen to reign over the activities of the football game between the Bobcats and the Waterloo Central Chargers.
