Police looking for man accused of choking ex-girlfriend

Jared Alvin Kupka, 38, of Tama, remains at large after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

A police record states that on Aug. 1 he called his ex-girlfriend and allegedly threatened to decapitate her. Later that day, he went to the woman’s house in Marshalltown and the two began arguing about a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The woman had purchased the motorcycle but Kupka wanted it and when she declined to tell him where it was he allegedly began choking the woman while threatening to kill her.

Police had spent part of the day trying to find Kupka to serve him with a no-contact order regarding the woman.

He is accused of first-degree harassment and domestic abuse assault by strangulation, both aggravated misdemeanors carrying a maximum of two years in prison on each count.

Nightstick allegedly used in bar fight

Two Marshalltown men are accused of multiple crimes after a fight at a bar Monday.

Haig Ngotel, 30, is accused of attempting to hit two men with a collapsible, police-style nightstick in the parking lot of Rumours bar in east Marshalltown.

After the incident, one of the men, Valerian Basilius, 46, allegedly used a knife to slash all of the tires on Ngotel’s car while police were finishing their investigation. Basilius is charged with third-degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor.

Ngotel is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, an aggravated misdemeanor; disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both simple misdemeanors.

Aggravated misdemeanors carry a maximum sentence of two years in prison for each count.

Leydie Hillary Mejia, 803 Woodbury St., made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge, a speeding charge and a no insurance charge. The two simple charges will continue with the driving while barred charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle her cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 26. Mejia was released on her own recognizance.

Scott Miller, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a parole violation charge. The court appointed Jennifer Miller to represent him in this case. The parole revocation hearing will be scheduled by his parole officer as the parole board’s calendar permits. No bond was allowed in this case.

Stephen Schossow, of Garwin, made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Chance Kadner, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 26. A substance abuse evaluation was ordered with the results to be submitted to the court within 60 days of today’s date. Kadner was released on his own recognizance.

Michael Westover, of Colo, made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days of today’s date.

Matthew John Surber, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. A probation revocation hearing was set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 16. Bond is set at $5,000 cash only.

Mitchell Vann Halsey, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge and a interference with official acts charge. He pleaded guilty to both charges. The court ordered that he serve 48 hours in jail for each charge with credit for time served. The sentences are to run consecutively.

Mark Lee Varnum, of Melbourne, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.50, due within 30 days of today’s date.

Lance Mandell Walker, 403 W. Nevada St., made an initial appearance on a public intoxication-enhanced charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 16. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety. The court ordered that Walker complete a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of his release.

Abdelaziz Nagib, 1706 E. Olive St. Apt. #24, made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a 22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75. The bond was condemned for payment of the charges with the remainder to be returned to the defendant.

David Darvell Willis, 402 Plaza Heights Rd. #1, made an initial appearance on warrants for a serious domestic assault charge and two counts of a child endangerment charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 23. Willis was released with supervision through the Department of Correctional Services and is to report to them within 72 hours of release. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.

Kellen Nail, 105 W. Church St., made an initial appearance on a violation of a no-contact order charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. A scheduling hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 9 to schedule a contempt hearing. Nail was released on his own recognizance. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.
