UnityPoint groundbreaking set for Monday

INVISION, an architecture firm in Des Moines, completed renderings of the expanded UnityPoint Health - Marshalltown South Campus. This rendering shows the exterior emergency room hospital entrance.

A virtual groundbreaking for the expanded UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown South Campus will take place on Monday. A video of the event will be made available on UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown Facebook and YouTube accounts.

INVISION, an architectural firm based in Des Moines, released renderings of the exterior and interior of the $38.4 million campus on Tuesday.

Hospital administrator Shari King said UnityPoint received the renderings on Monday.

“I like them very much,” she said. “It is so exciting to see this formalized. It is terrific.”

What makes the moment even sweeter is neither the Aug. 10 derecho nor the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down the timeline of the construction.

“There has been no delays and no change in services that will be offered,” King said. “We are really privileged to work with the architectural firm and the construction company who have proceeded with the progress.”

Construction, which will be performed by Graham Construction of Des Moines, is expected to take 24 months and the facility is scheduled to open in the spring of 2022.

King said Marshalltown residents can expect to see earth moving in the next two weeks.

Some of the planned features include a new inpatient hospital and additional space in the ambulance garage and the clinic.

The expansion will add 65,000 square feet to the South Campus, bringing the space to 137,000 square feet. All services available in the old UnityPoint hospital at 3 S. Fourth Ave. Marshalltown will be moved to the South Campus.

After everything is relocated, the old hospital facility will be placed on the market.

“This is huge for UnityPoint,” King said. “We will be able to deliver our services in a clean and modern facility and provide the community with local healthcare, which is what we promised to do when we moved here in 2017. This facility will help us deliver on that promise.”

Mayor Joel Greer said he could not think of anything more important than a new $38.4 million hospital for Marshalltown. When people consider moving to a new town, Greer said the biggest aspects they look at is housing, the quality of the school district and available medical care.

“Marshalltown has taken some good punches to the jaw but this medical facility will be a good push for getting us back into building the community,” he said.

Greer said the hospital, with the addition of housing developers taking more interest in Marshalltown and grants being offered, the town is poised to receive growth not seen since the 1940s.

“This will be a big deal for attracting and keeping medical providers and specialty care,” he said. “It will make Marshalltown more attractive for people looking to move and stay here. There have been few things during my time in office as exciting and amazing as a new hospital here.”
