School Board approves sweeping wage hikes
All district employees now making $15/hr or more
In the waning hours of Monday’s regular meeting, the Marshalltown School Board voted unanimously to approve a series of pay scale increases for district employees, with all employees now making at least $15 per hour.
Dr. Nora Ryan, Director of Human Resources, came before the board with 11 separate agreements for pay scale increases for different groups of employees at the district.
For operation, maintenance, and full-time transportation personnel, the pay scale saw a 8.08% cost increase, which includes step advancement and a starting rate of pay of $15, costing the district $152,826.
Paraeducators received a 24.37% overall increase in pay scale, which includes step advancement and a starting rate of pay of $15 per hour.
Nutrition professionals agreed to a 12.90% pay scale increase, which includes step advancement and a starting rate of pay of $15, costing the district $105,852.
The Marshalltown Education Association, the local teacher’s union, agreed to step and lane advancement, as well as an $685 increase to the base and a $740 increase to the supplemental base pay, which is equivalent to a 4.25% increase, including FICA and IPERS, but excluding TSS, with a total cost of $1,200,536 to the district.
Transportation personnel received an increase in driver pay by $0.71 on each step. This is approximately a 4.53% cost increase, including FICA and IPERS, for a total cost of $27,675.
Hourly IT technicians, HR staff, business office staff, bilingual attendance specialists, and youth counselors agreed to a 4.25% increase, for a cost of $17,308.
Salaried IT employees, school and student resource specialists, juvenile court liaisons, the instructional design specialist, the auditorium manager, and the nutrition supervisor garnered a 4.25% increase, except the for IT staff, who received $7,000 increase in salaries for Sebastian Ramirez and Andrew Claseman, and Jenn Harrington, who received a 4.25% increase plus $1,200. This would cost the District $63,423 in total.
Secretary and Administrative Assistants received a pay scale increase of 18.01%, which includes an entry wage of $15 per hour. This will cost the District $221,408.
Teacher substitute wages increased from $140 per day to $145, and for substitutes who work for 50 school days in one school year, an increase from $160 per day to $165.
Full-time substitutes also received a $5 increase and would be paid $180 a day with a teaching license and $150 a day without a teaching license.
Administrators agreed to a 4.25% increase, which equates to a $162,945 cost to the district.
All agreements are effective on July 1, with the exception of paraeducators, whose agreement will be effective on April 1.
