Marshalltown man arrested on felony robbery charges

A Marshalltown man was arrested late Monday night after allegedly assaulting a victim in presence of a witness in the 100 block of North 1st Street.

At approximately 10:11 p.m., Marshalltown police officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a male who had been seriously assaulted as the suspect was fleeing the scene. After arriving, they observed the suspect attempting to flee and took him into custody immediately.

The alleged victim, a 47-year-old Marshalltown man, was suffering from significant injuries as a result of the assault, which was observed by a witness, and transported to UnityPoint Health by ambulance for treatment. According to a police report, the suspect “instantaneously and without reason, seriously injured the victim by striking the victim’s face, leaving multiple contusions, in addition to breaking the victim’s left ankle, which left the bone protruding from the skin.”

Alexander James Brenner, 27, of Marshalltown, was arrested for first degree robbery, a Class B felony, willful injury, a Class C felony, and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor. He was transported to the Marshall County Jail, where he was still being held as of Wednesday morning.

Bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety, and a preliminary court hearing is scheduled for July 28.
