Residents learn about Hispanic, indigenous foods during ‘Food Camp’
Close to eight families attended a Latino and Indigenous Foods day camp hosted by the Marshall County Extension and Outreach on Tuesday. Held at Grimes Farm, attendees withstood the wind and learned the history of Hispanic and indigenous foods, then enjoyed platefuls of various dishes.
Lorena Dorado-Robles, 4-H recruitment, retention and engagement specialist, and Marshall County Extension Latino Youth and Family Outreach Coordinator Grisel Chavez led the group.
Dorado-Robles shared the objectives of the event, which were to explore some culinary history of traditional dishes, practice basic cooking skills, share personal experiences and enjoy the foods.
“Eighty percent of the [foods] we have here were sponsored,” she said.
The sponsors of the camp were Supermarket Villachuato, La Salud Restaurant and Grocery, Zamora Fresh Market and La Carreta Mexican Grill.
Some of the foods families learned about were tamales, menudo, mole, bunuelos, churros, Spanish rice, tacos, arepas, pozole and tortillas. Chavez said the foods which were highlighted were also considered indigenous.
“Those are traditional foods from Latin America,” she said. “When [Lorena] talked about pozole, she talked about the history; the history of tamales, tacos, where tortillas come from. She talked about all of the history of those traditional foods.”
Chavez said the camp was part of the Salir Adelante program, which was started by the Extension office last year and is intended for Latino families.
“We invite families to learn about how to prepare for and succeed in high school,” she said. “We start with seventh and eighth-grade families.”
The families have the option to transition to the 4-H Career and Pathways Academy, Chavez said. The Career and Pathways program focuses on creating an interest in higher education and starting careers in high-need fields such as education, healthcare, science, engineering and skilled trades.
“That one is mostly about career readiness and career exploration,” she said. “We open it to seventh grade to seniors.”
