New Marshalltown food truck opens for business

Seeking to fill the snow cone market in Marshalltown, Sno 2 Go Hawaiian Shaved Ice officially opened for business on Wednesday.

Owners Dylan and Kelsey Schumacher are self-professed dessert lovers.

“When Tropical Sno was around, that was one of our big things — we really liked Tropical Sno,” Dylan said. “Not having one around anymore really inspired us to open our own. We figured since they are not around anymore, and we have the means to do so, we jumped on the mission.”

Going the route of a food truck, Dylan Schumacher purchased a base trailer and built everything inside from the ground up. They wanted to take advantage of mobility to give more people a chance of getting one of the iconic summer treats.

“Since COVID happened, I feel in this day and age, people want to be outside,” Dylan said. “People want to do things, go out with their kids. They don’t want to be cooped up.”

Sno 2 Go is a new food truck in Marshalltown, and opened for business on Wednesday. The locations and hours of operation will be posted on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

He said they could have bought a premade trailer, but the price was astronomical.

“I found a base, found a guy who could do the paint job, Sign Creations did all the decals,” Schumacher said. “Even with hiring all of those guys, putting money in their pockets, I’m still at half the price of what it would cost buying one that was already made.”

Owning businesses is not new to the Schumachers. Dylan owns Schumacher Construction, and Kelsey is the owner of Schumacher Accounting.

“We figured it’s time for us to get into something together,” he said. “We’re tag teaming, having fun, doing what we love. Who doesn’t like a nice snow cone? That’s one of the best things about summer. We’re really blessed and fortunate to be in the position we’re in. It’s pretty awesome. It’s a pinch yourself moment.”

The husband and wife team wanted to bring something extra to their snow cones, something not typically thought of. Customers can request different toppings such as whipped cream and candies.

“We’re trying to be over the top a little bit,” Dylan said. “You don’t just come get a regular snow cone. We want to give a little extra that the kids are going to like. It’s going to bring a smile to mom and the kids’ faces. They’re going to walk away happy.”.

The extras proved popular even within the first hour of opening in the parking lot of Spahn and Rose. Schumacher said they completed roughly 30 orders in 45 minutes.

“We’re very happy so far with the turnout,” he said.

One specialty snow cone, the colorful Over the Rainbow, was the most requested and featured strawberry, grape, lemon lime and blue raspberry flavors, whipped cream and rainbow belt candies.

Schumacher said they also partnered with Red Bull to provide customers with the sweetness of a snow cone and the rush of caffeine.

He hopes to grow Sno 2 Go, and have two or three trucks cruising Marshalltown, but is not sure yet if that is realistic.

“Our goal is to be successful to the point where we can employ a couple kids, keep them safe off the streets and give them something productive to do,” Schumacher said.

Sno 2 Go hours of operation and locations will be varied, but he said the plan is to offer snow cones five or six days per week. The truck will be at local and private events, such as the Central Iowa Fair, Oktemberfest, wedding receptions and parties during the warmer season. He said when the weather gets colder, they will wrap it up until next year when the short sleeves start coming out.

Schumacher said they will post locations and times on their Facebook, Instagram and TikTok social media pages,

“You’ll have to follow us on social media and check where we’re at for the day,” he said. “We’ll give a fair warning, a heads up about where we will be.”
