Marshalltown man charged with murder after death investigation
Two people have been arrested in connection with the death of a man who was found in the roadway on North 12th Avenue with “traumatic injuries” early Saturday morning after an investigation by the Marshalltown Police Department and the Iowa DCI.
At 5:45 a.m. Saturday, public safety personnel responded to the area of North 12th Avenue and Bromley Street for a medical emergency, according to a press release from the MPD. The Marshall County 911 Communications Center received a call about a person found in the roadway on North 12th Avenue with serious injuries.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found an unresponsive adult male, who has since been identified as 23-year-old Ezra Oliver Seymour of Tama, in the roadway. He had visible traumatic injuries. Immediate medical care was provided to Seymour, who was subsequently transported to the Marshalltown hospital and later to a medical facility in Des Moines, where he died.
As a result of the investigation into Seymour’s death, 25-year-old Trequan Merez Cosgrove of Marshalltown was charged with first degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. In addition, Jaimee Yajaira Alcaraz-Gutierrez, 26, of Marshalltown, was charged with accessory after the fact.
Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper said the nature of the relationship between Cosgrove and Seymour is still being investigated, but he did confirm that they had contact with each other the morning of Aug. 31.
“This was not a random crime. They were at least minimally acquainted. An altercation led to the crime,” Tupper said.
According to court records, a Louisa County jury found Cosgrove guilty of two counts of going armed with intent and two counts of assault causing serious injury, all Class D felonies, back in 2019 in connection with the stabbing of two men near Wapello. In 2022, Cosgrove was also charged with first degree burglary in Marshall County, but a court only found him guilty of domestic abuse assault — injury or mental illness first offense. He received a suspended sentence and was placed on probation for a period not to exceed a year, and he was officially discharged from his sentence on Oct. 28, 2023, and his probation in November of 2023.
Cosgrove is being held at the Marshall County Jail on a $1 million cash only bond, and as of Monday, Alcaraz Gutierrez was not listed as a current inmate at the jail.
The MPD was assisted at the scene by the Marshall County 911 Communications Center, Marshalltown Fire Department, and the UnityPoint Ambulance Service.
