STC administration changes course, cancels Monday classes for student’s funeral service
TAMA — After strong criticism of an initial decision to only delay classes by two hours on Monday for the funeral services of a late student, South Tama County Superintendent John Cain has changed course and instead opted to cancel school for the day, according to a news release issued Friday.
A Celebration of Life for Sydney Culbertson, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 15, will be held inside the STC High School gym at 9 a.m. on Monday.
“Our district has carefully planned to ensure that students’ needs are met following the Celebration of Life. Support will be available from the Central Rivers Area Education Agency crisis team, and local faith-based leaders. We are offering students the option to grieve at home or with classmates at school. Our approach ensures that no one has to grieve alone,” the press release reads. “Our hearts are with Sydney’s family, friends, and the entire community as we come together to remember and honor her life. We are committed to supporting everyone through this difficult time. Thank you to all of you who have expressed your thoughts and our support for the Celebration of Life for Sydney Culbertson and her family.”
In the aftermath of the initial announcement, a Change.org petition urging district leadership to cancel school for the day garnered over 650 signatures.
