MFD responds to residential fire on South 5th Street
On Monday morning at 1:45 a.m., the Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire located at 507 S. 5th St., according to a press release. Upon arrival, MFD personnel found smoke visible from the rear and roof line of a 60′ wide and 40′ deep detached machine shop type building.
The fire crew entered the building, made their way to the attic and found a “smoldering fire” in the outer wall and roof assembly. The fire was quickly brought under control with a hose line, and the building was opened up to expose and extinguish hidden fire.
The property owner discovered the fire and called 911 to summon the MFD. Firefighters were at the scene for approximately two hours. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, and the property owner has not been displaced.
The fire originated on the south wall near the chimney pipe of a wood burning stove.
The cause of the unintentional fire is an improperly installed chimney of a wood burning stove.
The Marshalltown Police Department and Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.
