Bobcat Spotlight: Kaamu captures ‘moments of Americana’ through art and photography

T-R PHOTO BY JAKE RYDER MHS senior Rashid Kaamu, who came to the U.S. just two years ago after being resettled from a refugee camp in Zimbabwe, enjoys expressing himself through art and photography.

As someone who’s lived in America for only two years, Marshalltown High School senior Rashid Kaamu finds a way to express himself through art and capture moments of Americana through photography.

Kaamu is drawn specifically to the storytelling aspects of photography and how a single image can convey emotions and share experiences with the viewers. He’s also interested in how photography connects with nature.

“I also enjoy doing digital design, typography and drawing,” Kaamu said, adding, “I’m not very good at it, but I enjoy doing it.”

Kaamu and his family were resettled in Marshalltown in January 2023 from a refugee camp in Zimbabwe.

“I’ve been truly embraced by the warm and welcoming Iowan culture,” Kaamu said. “The kindness and generosity of the people here have made my transition so much smoother. The sense of community is incredible, and I’ve found it inspiring how everyone comes together to support one another.”

Kaamu, who also works at Hy-Vee while studying at MHS, noted the diversity of the area and the cultures represented within.

“I’ve been amazed by how varied and dynamic life is here,” Kaamu said. “The diversity in cultures, food and traditions is truly remarkable. It’s been fascinating to see how people from all over the world coexist and contribute to the fabric of American society. The emphasis on individual freedom and opportunity is inspiring.”

MHS art teacher Wade Judge praised Kaamu for “putting his own spin on things” when it comes to photography assignments.

While Kaamu is interested in studying criminal justice as a college major after high school, he also would like to continue his interest in photography after graduating from MHS. He’s as of yet undecided on where he will attend college, but noted that he had acceptance letters from several schools.

“I’m looking forward to pursuing higher education and exploring new opportunities that will help shape my future,” Kaamu said.
