Fatal crash on Highway 21 claims life of Tama County teen

DYSART — A motor vehicle crash Wednesday evening northwest of Dysart in Tama County has led to the death of a local teen.

According to the Iowa State Patrol crash report, Jason David Williams, 19, of Dysart died at the scene.

“Yes there was a fatal motor vehicle crash in the 1700 block of Highway 21 yesterday,” Tama County Sheriff Chief Deputy Joe Quandt told the newspaper Thursday morning.

The crash took place just after 5:30 p.m. as Williams was traveling southbound in a 2011 Volkswagen GTI on Hwy 21 south of 170th Street. The driver of the other vehicle, Mark Anthony Bagenstos, 62, of Evansdale, was driving northbound while operating a 2018 Ford F-150 truck towing a trailer. The vehicles collided in an offset head-on collision (at an angle).

Bagenstos and his passenger, Jeanne Kay Bagenstos, 59, of Clutier, were both injured and transported by ambulance to Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

The crash occurred not far from the ‘T’ intersection where Highway 21 meets Highway 8. All three individuals involved were wearing seatbelts, according to the crash report.

The Tama County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol are handling the investigation.

The Dysart Police Department, Dysart Fire Department, Dysart Ambulance, Iowa DOT, Tama Police Department, and Tama County Medical Examiner all provided assistance at the scene.
