Numerous felony trials will begin in Marshall County district court

Twenty-four felony cases — in which victims were killed, assaulted or stolen from — are waiting for the beginning of the trials in Marshall County Court.

Of the 24 cases, three are for homicides. Ilias Lasley, 29, of Ankeny, is facing two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Marshalltown residents Maria Murillo and Frances Tillie Gasca. The double homicide occurred in April north of Marshalltown. It is alleged Lasley became upset that they were speaking in Spanish and then shot them both. He is also charged with two counts of dominion or control of a firearm or weapon by a felon.

On Feb. 25, the trial for Trequan Cosgrove, 26, of Marshalltown, is set to begin. He is charged with the August first-degree murder of Ezra Oliver Seymour of Tama. Cosgrove is alleged to have gotten into an argument with Seymour before driving over him with a Cadillac.

On March 25, the vehicular homicide trial for Morgan Weigelt, 24, of Albion, will begin. In May 2023, it is alleged she rear-ended a tractor on Marsh Avenue while operating a cell phone. The driver of the tractor, Clarence Borton, died at the scene.

On Jan. 14, the following trial will be held:

• Jammar Watkins, 30, of Marshalltown, charged with an August second-degree burglary in which he allegedly broke into a home and used the victim’s cell phone to transfer funds.

Scheduled to begin jury trials on Jan. 28 are:

• Josiah Benbow, 27, of Melbourne, who is facing second-degree sexual abuse of a female child which allegedly occurred in December 2022;

• Jesse Davis, 34, of Cedar Rapids, charged with causing serious injury in March in which he allegedly stabbed a man in the stomach with a knife during a fight;

• Noe Hernandez Espino, 50, of Marshalltown, is facing a causing bodily injury charge stemming from when he allegedly assaulted a female victim in August and threatened her with a knife;

• Genaro Macias Avalos, 56, of Marshalltown, is charged with second-degree sexual abuse of a 6- or 7-year-old child, which occurred between November 2017 and November 2018;

• Jose Macias Flores, 44, of Marshalltown, faces second-degree sexual abuse of two minor children, which was reported in April;

• Daniel Morales, 21, of Marshalltown, is charged with second-degree sexual abuse of a 5-year-old child, which allegedly occurred multiple times from June 2020 to September 2020.

On Feb. 18, the following trials will begin:

• Bernard Brooks, 31, of Des Moines, is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a July 2023 accident on Quarry Road in which a passenger died;

• Daniel Ceballos Garcia, 24, of Marshalltown, is facing an August charge of first-degree burglary during which he illegally entered a home, assaulted a woman and her two children and took the woman’s cell phone;

• Rodolfo Garcia, 44, of Tama, is scheduled to be in court for identity theft of more than $10,000. The charge was made in September 2021, and Garcia is alleged to have earned $174,645 with a false identity;

• Miguel Ibarra Lemus, 26, of Marshalltown, is charged with third-degree sexual abuse of a woman in October 2023;

• Dino Mukandama, 21, of Marshalltown, charged with first-degree theft in July during which he allegedly forged a $12,000 check to purchase a vehicle from the victim;

• Edison Nsengiyumva, 25, of Marshalltown, will face third-degree sexual abuse of a woman in September 2022;

• Tyler Patterson, 50, of Marshalltown, is charged with first-degree theft in July during which he allegedly wrote $10,873 in bad checks;

• Marco Tapia, 28, of Marshalltown, is charged with third-degree sexual abuse of an intoxicated woman without her consent in August 2023.

On March 4, a trial is scheduled for:

• Theodore Warden, 44, of Melbourne. He is charged with second-degree sexual abuse of a child dating from March 2013 to April 2023.

The following trials are set for March 25:

• Angel Galvez-Trejo, 21, of Marshalltown, is charged with going armed with intent in March 2023 in which he allegedly drove a vehicle and chased his victims, who were driving another car, through town before firing on them with a rifle;

• Ernesto Garcia-Rodriguez, 54, of Marshalltown, has been charged with second-degree sexual abuse of a child between the ages of 5 and 7, from August 2008 to April 2010;

• Steven Seelye, Jr., 42, of Ferguson, is facing first-degree theft. He is alleged to have stolen a $22,000 train radiator from Electro Motive in March.

On April 8, two felony trials will include:

• Justin Glenney, 51, of Marshalltown, who is charged with third-degree sexual abuse of a woman which allegedly took place in June 2023;

• Stanley Chesick, 81, of Gilman, is charged with second-degree sexual abuse of an 11-year-old child, which allegedly occurred in July.
