GILMAN — In partnership with an outside firm, the East Marshall Community School District’s Board of Education will begin the search for a new superintendent to take over next year as the man who currently holds the position, Anthony Ryan, intends to step down and pursue “new opportunities,” according to a press release issued Tuesday.

“We are excited about the future of East Marshall and the opportunities ahead,” Board President Lisa Meling said. “We appreciate and thank Mr. Ryan for his dedication and service to our district. As we search for our next superintendent, our focus will be on finding a strong leader who can build on our successes and continue moving our district forward.”

Ryan, who previously held the same title in Centerville, came to East Marshall in 2016, and he will be moving on to the superintendency at Louisa-Muscatine, which is located in far eastern Iowa near the Illinois border. The news was announced in a press release issued by the McPherson and Jacobson Executive Search Firm on Jan. 20. In the last few years, Ryan had been named a finalist for the superintendent positions at Waverly-Shell Rock, North Butler-Clarksville, Glenwood, Benton Community and Pocahontas Area.

“I am grateful for the opportunity presented to me during my last nine years at East Marshall CSD, for the committed staff at East Marshall, and for the many positive relationships that were cultivated along the journey that I have been privileged to experience. We wish East Marshall the best as they work through the future selection of the next superintendent that will lead them through the next few years,” he said in a statement to the T-R. “As a family, we are focusing on supporting a positive final semester for our daughter, who will proudly graduate from East Marshall High School this May.”

According to 2023-2024 figures from the Iowa Department of Education, Louisa-Muscatine’s certified enrollment was 675.5 students compared to 511.5 at East Marshall. Louisa-Muscatine is also the district where Ryan started his career as an educator.

“We are heading back to our original roots,” he said. “We are working hard at focusing on a positive transition for both districts and truly supporting our daughter in having a very successful, positive, and strong final semester as an East Marshall Mustang. Again, we are very proud to have three kids graduate from East Marshall High School and wish to highlight how grateful we are as parents.”
