Toddler saved from house fire in critical condition

A 3-year-old girl was rescued from a house fire Monday afternoon by two Marshalltown Fire Department firefighters.

The Marshalltown Police Department was first to arrive on scene and directed the firefighters to the girl’s second floor location. Firefighters attempted a ladder rescue from the rear of the house. Two others entered the front and found the toddler unconscious. CPR was started immediately after they removed her from the house. Two minutes passed between the fire department arriving on scene and the girl being rescued.

An ambulance transported the 3-year-old from the scene. She was then taken by air to Iowa City to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in critical condition.

The fire was brought under control with two attack lines and is under investigation by the Marshalltown Fire and Police Departments. The Iowa State Fire Marshal Special Agents have been called to assist with the investigation.

The girl’s family is being supported by family and the American Red Cross.
