County leaders prepare for Veterans Memorial ceremony on Saturday

T-R PHOTO BY LANA BRADSTREAM - Veterans Affairs Director Kevin Huseboe gives an update about the Veterans Memorial to the Marshall County Supervisors during the regular Wednesday meeting. There will be a Veterans Memorial Ribbon Cutting on Saturday at 10 a.m. on the courthouse lawn.
As some noticeable changes were made to the lawn outside the Marshall County Courthouse this week, the supervisors received an update on the project.
During the regular Wednesday morning meeting, Veterans Affairs Director Kevin Huseboe said the weather worked for the crew from McCall Monument of Newton in erecting the monument. The project, which was conceived in July 2023, is wrapping up.
“You don’t know what it means to bring it to reality in under two years,” he said. “The support from the community and everyone who has donated for this awesome memorial [is just incredible.]”
Huseboe said the memorial blends into the landscaping of the historical courthouse.
“Reality is starting to hit me of just how big of an impact this is going to be,” he said. “The nice part with 911 on there, is it encompasses law enforcement, fire and EMS also. So, it’s a memorial for them also.”
Supervisor Carol Hibbs asked if any more work needed to be done. Huseboe told her the flag poles will be set in July.
“That’s the last piece of the puzzle,” he said.
Huseboe added that Building and Grounds Director Lucas Baedke’s staff will take care of maintaining the memorial and mowing around it.
The Veterans Memorial Ribbon Cutting will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. Huseboe said there will be a firetruck with a ladder and a large United States flag hanging from it. He added Center Street will be blocked off from Main to Church streets from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Huseboe said Saturday should be a good day and thanked the supervisors for giving him the opportunity to do the job.
“We done it,” Huseboe said. “Everyone, if you get a chance on Saturday morning, go check it out. It’s been a great project to have done.”
Supervisor Jarret Heil said they are looking forward to the event. He recalled living in Washington, D.C. and seeing the monuments in the nation’s capitol. Now Marshalltown can have a piece of that.
“Anyone who has driven by, can see what a gorgeous monument it is,” he said. “. . . Anyone who loves history, anyone who has a love for the veterans, which we all should, you’re going to absolutely love this. We’re looking forward to Saturday. Come on out, check it out and enjoy it with us.”
