An as-yet-unidentified individual died on Tuesday afternoon after the northbound tractor trailer he was operating went off of Highway 330 onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 west of Marshalltown.

At 2:28 p.m., the Marshall County Communications Center received 911 calls reporting an accident, according to a press release. Deputies arrived on the scene within minutes of the call and found a tractor trailer and the agricultural equipment hauled on the semi trailer had become dislodged during the collision and was now blocking the eastbound lanes of Highway 30 underneath the bridges for Highway 330 lanes.

The semi tractor was on fire when deputies arrived. Bystanders and deputies used multiple fire extinguishers to help suppress the fire until Fire Department personnel arrived on scene to extinguish the fire and extricate the patient.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the driver of the tractor trailer succumbed to his injuries at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The eastbound lanes of Highway 30 were closed for over three hours due to the crash investigation and scene cleanup.

The name of the driver is not being released pending the notification of family. The Iowa State Patrol Troopers from Post 1 are investigating the crash at this time. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Clemons Fire Department, the Haverhill Fire Department, Iowa DOT Maintenance Staff, the Iowa State Patrol, the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Marshalltown Fire Department, Melbourne Fire and EMS, the Rhodes Fire Department, the State Center Fire Department, and UnityPoint Ambulance Service.
