Judy and Dave Adland of Adland Engraving Screen Printing & Embroidery Co. of Marshalltown proudly refer to the enterprise as a “family business,” and it is — unequivocally.
Additionally, it is a ‘hands-on’ family business since both are actively involved in day-to-day operations. Judy and Dave have been co-owners for many years – and as a result Judy merited selection in the 2025 Times Republican’s Women in Business feature.
Since its founding by Colleen Adland – Dave’s mother in 1987 – the couple and several family members have been involved in overseeing the business. It was originally located in the 100 block of West Anson St.
Judy and Dave have worked in a competitive local environment producing laser-engraved plaques, nametags, signage, screen-printed apparel, promotional items, and embroidered wearables.
“Dave’s late father Dick said competition is good,” Judy said. “But our main priority is to focus on our customers and what is going on inside this business. We try to sell quality products with a fast turn-around … which our customers appreciate.”

Judy oversees the engraving of products, managing inventory, and other tasks.
She maintains a lot of personable customer contact – whether on the telephone or in person. Building a business for her is all about building relationships with customers.
When the need arises, Dave will help Judy and vice-versa.
In 1991, the business moved to its present location at 307 Riverside St. – a stone’s throw from North Third Street/Iowa Highway 14 and in a small commercial neighborhood with a convenience store, bakery and tire businesses.
Before the company purchased it, the building once housed Culligan Water Systems and later a fitness business. While helping grow the business Judy and Dave were parents to two children — Bianca (nee Adland) Bennett and Nick Adland.
Bennett is the executive director of Bickford Cottage in Marshalltown, and Nick lives at home with Judy and Dave. The Adlands have three grandsons.
Grant — the oldest –graduated from Marshalltown High School several years ago and is a student and golfer at Ottawa University in Surprise, Ariz. He received a golf scholarship from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids before transferring to Ottawa.
Sam, the middle grandson, and Joe, the youngest, live in Marshalltown. Both are extremely active in Bobcat sports.
Judy said she and Dave “love” to watch them compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf and swimming. It was obvious during a face-to-face interview that Judy takes her business tasks seriously as she does making Marshalltown a better place to live and work.
“It is important to volunteer,” she said. “Volunteering one’s time helps a community thrive.”
One of her key community commitments was serving for many years as volunteer chairwoman of the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown’s (UPHM) Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon held at Elmwood Country Club.
Concurrently, she served on the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown board of directors as a volunteer. She readily acknowledged the help of other committee members and of UPHM Foundation employees in making the event — frequently with standing room only crowds — a success.
Additionally, for many years Judy was actively involved with the Marshalltown Assistance League – a large group of civic-minded women who have funded a variety of community betterment projects ranging from community theater to youth sports.
The businesswoman said with a smile she considers herself a Marshalltonian – and why not? She was born in Minnesota before her family moved to Marshalltown when she was a year old.
Judy, an advocate for the community, said it is troublesome to hear negative comments about Marshalltown.
The couple have no plans to retire. Meanwhile, customers will find the Adlands at the business from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. M-F.
