Crash near Gilman closes Highway 146 for several hours Tuesday morning

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO A crash north of Gilman on Tuesday morning resulted in the closure of Highway 146 for approximately six hours, with several area first responding agencies coming to the scene.

GILMAN — At approximately 6:14 a.m. on Tuesday, the Marshall County Communications Center took a report of a crash involving a tractor trailer and a car in the 3100 mile of Zeller Avenue (Highway 146) north of Gilman. Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) arrived on scene to find a head-on collision with serious injuries, according to a press release issued later in the day.

The initial investigation at the scene indicated the southbound car had crossed the centerline into the path of the northbound tractor trailer. The driver of the car had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle by the Marshalltown Fire Department. A LifeFlight helicopter was summoned to the scene. The driver of the car was transported by LifeFlight Air Ambulance. The driver of the tractor trailer was transported from the scene by ground ambulance.

The names of the drivers involved have not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members. The Iowa State Patrol is conducting a technical crash investigation, and requests for additional information should be directed to the ISP.

The roadway was closed for approximately six hours for the investigation and scene cleanup. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were Gilman Fire and EMS, Iowa DOT maintenance staff, Iowa State Patrol, LifeFlight Air Ambulance, Marshalltown Fire Department, and UnityPoint EMS.
