IVH resident injured after being hit by vehicle Wednesday morning
A wheelchair-bound Iowa Veterans Home (IVH) resident was injured early Wednesday morning after he was hit by a crossing vehicle at the intersection of 13th Street and Summit Street.
“Iowa Veterans Home staff provided immediate assistance, followed quickly by local emergency responders. The resident was transported to a local medical facility by 7:30 am, who later transferred them to a medical facility in Des Moines,” Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs Spokesman Karl Lettow said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon. “The thoughts and prayers of the whole Iowa Veterans Home community are with our resident and their family at this time. We are grateful to our Marshalltown emergency responders and local medical facilities for their rapid response, enduring service and cooperation. We deeply appreciate the support of our Marshalltown community for our veterans and residents. We encourage everyone to do so in a way respectful of the privacy of our resident and their loved ones.”
Most Wanted Coffee, which is located just south of the crossing on 13th Street, shared a post on social media urging drivers to slow down and pay attention, noting that the resident was a beloved regular customer of the shop.
“Pay attention people, ZERO excuses everyday we watch vehicles fly down the street and not even attempt to make a stop,” they wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with (the resident) this morning!”
According to Marshalltown Police Department Capt. Kiel Stevenson, 74-year-old Patricia McMurray was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in connection with the incident.
