Marshalltown man on trial for murder also charged with sexual abuse of minor

A Marshalltown man who is currently awaiting a verdict in his bench trial for first-degree murder has also been charged with felony sexual abuse, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD).
On Aug. 16, 2024, the MPD launched an investigation into possible sexual abuse involving a female victim under the age of 13. Through the subsequent investigation, a male DNA profile was obtained. A search of CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) on Feb. 6, 2025 showed a match to 26-year-old Trequan Merez Cosgrove of Marshalltown, who was already in custody.
A criminal complaint alleges that the victim met Cosgrove at a hotel in Marshalltown, drank alcohol and did not recall the events that unfolded after that, but a sexual assault kit performed by medical staff the following day turned up the aforementioned DNA sample from Cosgrove.
Cosgrove was formally charged with second degree sexual abuse, a Class B felony, on Thursday. The defendant is also accused of killing 23-year-old Ezra Seymour by intentionally running him over with a vehicle on Aug. 31, 2024, and proceedings in his bench trial concluded in late February. A verdict in that case is still pending.
