The Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) got a hand from firefighters with several surrounding volunteer departments — Green Mountain, Le Grand and State Center — in addressing a challenging situation on the eastern edge of town Monday afternoon. According to Fire Chief Christopher Cross, a tree that had previously caught on fire last Friday was taken to Top Notch Tree Service and accidentally reignited on Monday, spreading to a nearby field due to the strong winds and even temporarily shutting down railroad traffic in the area. Cross appreciated the support from the volunteers as well as the work of his own team in controlling the fire, which resulted in minor damages and no injuries.
