Parks and Recreation director tenders resignation after just two months on the job

Evenson

The city of Marshalltown will once again be on the hunt for a new parks and recreation director as the man who currently holds the position, Jeffrey Evenson, recently submitted his two weeks notice after just two months on the job.

KFJB Radio first reported the news on Thursday morning. The now outgoing director started here on Feb. 3 and had most recently worked for the city of Minneapolis’s park board before taking the Marshalltown job. Although the T-R reached out to Evenson, City Administrator Carol Webb and Mayor Joel Greer for further comment on Thursday, no explanation has been provided for his sudden departure as of press time.

Back in December of 2024, the council voted 6-1 (with Councilor Melisa Fonseca as the lone dissenter) to approve Evenson’s hiring despite hearing from a pair of public commenters who spoke up in favor of another candidate, current Recreation Supervisor Jennifer Hart.

Evenson succeeded Geoff Hubbard, a Marshalltown native who held the title from 2019 to 2024 and is now leading the city of Johnston’s Parks and Recreation Department. Webb said the search for Evenson’s replacement will commence “ASAP,” and his last day will be April 11.

Starting at $4.38/week.
