Richard “Rick” Drew, 73, of Marshalltown, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, in Ames under the care of Mary Greeley Hospice.
Richard York Drew was born to Richard William and Edna Jean (Wilson) Drew in Marshalltown on April 21, 1948. Rick was the firstborn of three children.
He grew up on the family acreage on the Sand Road that his father built. He attended a one room school in Taylor township for kindergarten and first grade until the school was consolidated to Marshalltown where he graduated with the Marshalltown class of 1966. He worked at Kiowa and Haley’s grocery when he was in high school. Rick went to Fisher Controls on his Senior skip day and was employed in the factory. He joined the US Navy as a machinist and served four years aboard the US destroyer Jonas Ingram, that was commissioned out of Norfolk, Virginia, during the Viet Nam War. He spent six months at a time in the Caribbean and Germany.
Richard married Marvis Lorraine (Fuller) Drew on July 21st, 1972, in Princeton, Missouri. Two children were born to this union: Jennifer (Jenny) Lorraine and Robert (Bob) William.
Richard retired from Emerson in 2005 after 39 and a half years as a Triple A Toolmaker. He was a charter member of the Marshalltown Izaak Walton’s Whitetail bowhunting club and as a Little League coach and board member, instrumental in getting a ball park for the Green Mountain Little League. He supported his wife Marvis with her family’s Fuller Arboretum at Green Castle Recreation Park and the Quilt of Valor program.
Next to his family, Rick was an outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, go camping with family and friends and care for his acreage and vegetable garden. He and Marvis accomplished their retirement dream of going to Alaska with bonus trips to Hawaii, Michigan and South Dakota. He took the entire family to the Lake of the Ozarks. He was a very caring and devoted person to his cousins, coworkers and lifelong friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, grandparents Alfonzo William Drew, Geneva York (Stonewall) Drew, Aupporely, Thomas and Bess (Strahorn) Wilson, sister- in-law Nancy Mommer, brother-in-law Roger Fuller, and great nephew Brant Saunders.
Left to cherish his memory are his spouse Marvis; Children: Robert William (Kimberly Jean Fouch) and Jennifer (Scott Eric Kilborn); grandchildren: Brandon Robert Drew, Brock Raymond Drew, Skylar Drew Boggs, Alyzah Rayne Boggs, Quinten Josef and Seth Eric Kilborn, Haley Ann (Jose) Gudiel and great grandson Greyson William Gudiel. Siblings, Elizabeth (Bill) Schmidt and Kathryn Lorine (Roy) Davis. Brother-in-law Roger Mommer. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and Great Aunt Susan (Drew) Gould.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 19 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 20 at 10:30 A.M. at Timber Creek Cemetery with full military honors provided by the combined VFW / American Legion Honor Guard of the surrounding area and Pastor Bob Kosbau officiating.
