David Joseph Daters, 72 of Marshalltown passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 at Unity Point Health in Marshalltown, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines or to the Animal Life Line. Only casual attire is needed, nothing formal as that definitely wouldn’t be Dave. Private family services will be held on Saturday March 5, 2022 starting at 1:30 P.M. with burial at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Dave was born in State Center, Iowa on October 15, 1949 to Edmund and Helen (Fouch) Daters. He attended school in Haverhill, Anson Junior High and Graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1967. Dave also completed electrical, computer, drafting and blueprint reading at MCC.

On August 17, 1968 he was married to Dianna (Cripps) Daters. They had been married for 53 years. Two children survive: Lisa (Mike) Appelgate and grandchildren, Regan, Connor, and Rylee. Heather (Chad) Hopper and stepchildren and step-grandchild, Megan Hopper, Avianna King, and Morgan Hopper.

Dave began work in 1967 with Caitlin Construction Company. Then to Cessford Construction Company for seasonal work. Dave worked a short period of time for Fishers Control but was laid off and never returned. In 1968 he went to work for Marshalltown Trowel Company and worked there until 2009, where he was the facilities manager. In March of 2009 he went to work for Hawkins Electric and then to Target in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On November 8, 2010 He was hired by the City of Marshalltown as their Public Facility Superintendent and City Electrical Inspector. A job, Dave said was the “best job” he ever had and I’m actually not sure if he would have ever retired from that position. He enjoyed working with his fellow employees and all the people that he worked with when doing his electrical inspections.

Dave and Dianna bought as acreage after the girls were gone from home. Dave loved working on the acreage, tinkering with all his many pieces of machinery, fixing all the things that needed to be taken care of and tending to the horses. He loved having his best gal friend “Gabbi Girl” always there to be by his side no matter what he was doing, including helping him with digging holes. She always enjoyed taking rides with him in HER truck. He loved being a BEARS fan and riding his Harley trike.

Dave and Dianna did a lot of traveling to see Heather’s softball games all through high school, college and her slo-pitch games. They enjoyed watching her recreational volleyball games, too! They visited, when they were able, all the many locations that the grandchildren lived in. This took us to many locations that would probably never been seen if not for them.

Dave served 20 years in the Iowa National Guard as a SFC/E7 which included being in the Military Police and as a food service Sergeant. Dave served 12 years on the LDF, LDF-Semco and East Marshall school boards serving 2 years as president. He also worked part-time in Legrand as the maintenance person.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Helen Daters and his in-laws, Eldon and Margaret (Morey) Cripps. Sister-in-law Deanna “De” Daters. His two beloved german shepherds, Maggie Mae and Gabbi Girl who just passed on December 17, 2021.

Starting at $4.38/week.
