Born Mary Ann Grove on September 27, 1936, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Weatherly) Grove. After graduating from Le Grand High School in 1954, she went on to attend the Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and later Drake University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education.

Mary Ann married her high school sweetheart and one true love, Garry Hall, on April 20, 1956, at the Carlton Brethren Church in Garwin, Iowa. Together they made their home in Hartford, Iowa, where they raised their four children with love and devotion. They retired to their home in Marshalltown.

Mary Ann’s passion for bettering the lives of children through education not only made her a wonderful mother, but also an excellent teacher. She dedicated the greater part of her career to the Carlisle Community School District in elementary education.

Mary Ann was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hartford and the Carlton Brethren Church, where she was actively involved with the Women of Grace and served as a Deaconess. Mary Ann had many passions, ranging from gardening and sewing to remodeling and construction. She also enjoyed bird watching. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Larry Joe (Kim) Hall, of Carlisle, Iowa, Shawn (Lisa) Hall, of Bigfork, Montana, Elizabeth (Stan) Overstake, of Marshalltown, Iowa and Fern (Wade) Steward, of Le Grand, Iowa; grandchildren: Colin Hall, Hannah Overstake, Connor Overstake, Walker (Samantha) Steward, Payton (Maddy) Steward, Caden (Hannah) Steward, and Haven Steward; great grandchildren: Cash, Otto, Ruby and Emmett; her siblings: Chuck (Bev) Grove, Bob (Pat) Grove and Betty (Den) Nuese and many nieces and nephews.

In eternal life, she is reunited with her beloved husband, Garry; her parents, Clarence and Mabel Grove; her grandson, Matthew Hall and great grandson, Levi Hall.

Mary Ann’s family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to The Willows of Marshalltown and St. Croix Hospice who provided her with loving care in her final days.
