Lyle “L.R.” Matney, 85
Lyle “L.R.” Matney, 85, lifelong Le Grand resident, passed away Friday, October 21, 2022, at Mercy hospital in Des Moines due to complications from a bad fall, with family at his side.
Funeral services was held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the LeGrand Friends Church. He will be laid to rest in the LeGrand Friends Cemetery. Born on September 9, 1937, in Ankney, Iowa, he was the son of George and Suzanna Matney.
On June 3, 1955, he was united in marriage to Nancy Buchanan, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in LeGrand. Lyle was employed at Fisher Controls for 45 years and was a member of the U.A.W. Retiring in May 1999.
He was also a member of the LeGrand Friends Church, where he served as a Trustee for many years and was a chairman of LeGrand Friends Cemetery committee for 50 years. He also served on the LeGrand city council and enjoyed being a member of the snowmobile club. Lyle enjoyed going to antique auctions, collecting everything from wagon wheels to Jack Sprat. He and Vern Crookshank started up the first sanitation service in LeGrand over 50 years ago. Lyle enjoyed attending many of his grandkids sporting events. He loved being outdoors, whether it be mowing, meeting up with his coffee group and his daily trips to town. He enjoyed going to car shows to show off his bright red Mustang. He enjoyed his winter trips to South Padre Island, Branson and cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean. Lyle was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 67 years, Nancy, his children: Kathy (Cary) Mathes and their children, Chelsey (Kevin), Apryl (Adam), Ryan (Charlene), Brett. Kristi (Matt) Ihde, and their children, Blake (Allie), Kara. Kendra (Dennis) Shipley and their children, Josh (Stephanie), Melissa (Patrick), Dawson, Khloe. 11 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Mary Ann (Clayton) Newell, Shirley Snook and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karla Kay, his parents George and Suzanna Matney, his parents-in-law, Ward and Katherine (Gibson) Buchanan, brother, Oren Matney, sister, Judy Paar, Sister-in-law, Wilda Matney, Brother-in-law, George Snook and a very special Aunt, Irene Pierce.
