Mary Lou Voigt

Mary Lou Voigt was born in the small town of Whitten, Iowa on June 21, 1929. She passed away on May 24, 2023, in her home of 56 years in Oceanside, California.

Mary Lou was born to William and Eldona (Wilcox) Clough. Her parents and siblings, brothers Charles, Lowell, William, and James, and sister, Clarece, all preceded her in death.

Mary Lou was a switchboard operator, bill collector, and school teacher prior to enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1951. She met her future husband while stationed in San Francisco, California. Mary Lou married Wilson A. Voigt (Bill) on April 7, 1956 in Worcester, Massachusetts. They were stationed in San Diego, Hawaii, North Carolina, and then back to California where she made her home for almost 60 years. Mary Lou was a teacher for the Vista Unified School District for over 20 years before retiring. She loved her students and taught at both Casita Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School.

Mary Lou kept very busy in her retirement. She loved traveling all over the United States, Europe and China. She was a very skilled seamstress, making clothes for her children, grandchildren, and her restored dolls. Mary Lou loved gardening and carpentry and turned her backyard into unbelievable oasis. She was very active in numerous civic activities to include: North Coast United Methodist Church, the Women Marines Association, the Marine Corps Mustang Association, the Women’s Club of Oceanside, the Golden Girls Barbie Club, the California Retired Teachers Association and many more.

Bill and Mary Lou were married for 42 years. She is survived by their four children. Wilson K. (Bill) lives in Poway with his wife, Susan. Jana lives in Tampa, Florida, with her husband, Joe. Mary J. lives in Oceanside and cared for Mary Lou during her time of need. Richard lives in San Diego.

They had four grandchildren that they loved very much; Jessica and Jared Ryan, Katie Voigt Frey, and Erin Krescanko Miller.

Mary Lou is survived by eight great grandchildren that loved visiting her, her home, and her dolls: Davie, Ryan and Gemma Rolle; Autumn, Stephen, and Alice Frey; Liliana and Selina Ryan; and baby Miller due in August.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 20, 2023, from 6 to 8 pm at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92054.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 10 am at North Coast United Methodist Church, 1501 Kelly St., Oceanside, CA 92054. Followed by interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
