Marvin L. Judkins, Ph.D.
Marvin LaVear Judkins was born to Joe and Atha (Ruble) Judkins in Osceola, Iowa, on November 12, 1944. The family moved east of Liberty Center, Iowa, in 1947. He attended Liberty Center and then Southeast Warren High School, graduating in 1963. Beverly Oldaker, the daughter of William and Eileen Oldaker, and Marvin were married in August 1963. To this union two children were born: Robert Allen and Sherri Ann.
Marvin started attending the University of Iowa, earning a B.A. in American History in 1967 and a M.A.T. in American History and Education in 1970. They moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1970 where Marvin taught ninth grade American history and coached seventh grade basketball and football at Lenihan Jr. High in Marshalltown.
In 1975, they moved to Carlisle, Iowa, where Marvin served as 7-12 vice principal and later as assistant superintendent and also served three years as athletic director. Their children Rob and Sherri graduated from Carlisle High School. In 1984, Marvin moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa, to serve as superintendent of schools, later also serving as Bayard CSD superintendent and then served as the first Coon Rapids Bayard superintendent. While there, he earned his Ph.D. from Iowa State University.
In 1990, Marvin moved to Centerville, Iowa, where he served as superintendent until taking early retirement in 2002. He later returned to work part-time serving as special education director and business manager in Centerville and Moulton-Udell CSD.
Marvin and Bev moved to Indianola, Iowa, in 2010, and he retired from his part-time jobs in 2011. He continued supervising student teachers for two more years. In 2021, they moved to Pella, Iowa.
Marvin was a member of Rotary International in both Coon Rapids and Centerville, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow in Centerville. Marvin was a member of the Iowa State Phi Delta Kappa and was a charter member of School Administrators of Iowa. While in Iowa City and Marshalltown, Marvin worked as a truck driver, a custodian, a cement worker and a carpenter during the summers.
Marvin faced several health issues for several years and passed away on October 23, 2023, at MercyOne West, West Des Moines, with his family by his side. He attained the age of 78 years, 11 months and 11 days. Marvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bev; his two children and their families. They are: Rob and Shannon (Peck) Judkins, of Pella, Iowa, Jordan and Kallie Judkins, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Calvin, Lincoln and Peyton Blake and Andrea Judkins, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Grant and Haley Judkins, of Iowa City, Iowa, Sherri and J. B. Williams, of Cabot, Arkansas, Sean Williams, of Ward, Arkansas, Nicole Williams Compton and Dusten Stewart, of Ward, Arkansas, Cayden Moore. Of Marvin’s original family he leaves his brothers, Gerald and his wife Kristi Judkins and Dennis and his wife, Cheryl Judkins and brother-in-law, Richard and his wife Sandy Oldaker. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and in 1946 by older sister Gloria.

Visitation with the family present will be on Friday, October 27, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Pella. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 28, at 10:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Pella. Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home in Pella is in charge of the arrangements.
