Donald was born November 14, 1941, to Claus and Frieda (Engle) Hein in Garwin, IA where he was raised and attended Garwin High School. Following high school Donald joined the US Army and proudly served his country earning numerous titles, awards, and badges. His ranks included Squad Leader, Sargent E-5, 1st Cavalry Airmobile, and 1st Battalion, 5th Calvary, Bravo Company. Donald was honored to receive a Purple Heart, Vietnam Badge, Vietnam Combat Badge, Expert Rifleman Badge, M-15 Sharpshooter Badge, Infantry Badge, and the Good Combat Badge. When asked about his time in the Army, Donald said “I don’t regret serving, and would serve again”.

Donald married Judy McGowan in May of 1966. The two made their home on a farm north of Gladbrook, making farming his career. Along with farming, he had a love for horses and was a lifetime member of the American Paint Horse Association. He spent many years showing paint and quarter horses with his daughter, Tracy. Donald stayed very active in the community and was Commander of the Gladbrook Legion and the Tama County Legion. He also served on the Tama County Fair Board and worked at Farm Service and the Lincoln Co-op. Donald was a member of the Ehrig-McTurk Post 127 Legion in Gladbrook, the 40/8, and JCs. He served as a YF youth leader at Peace United Church of Christ and was an active member in the church.

Donald will be greatly missed by his daughter, Tracy Hein (Al Hart) of Olathe, KS, his special friend, Vivian LeVier of Garwin, one sister, Esther Corrigan of New Hartford, IA, one sister-in-law, Rhonda Hein of Gladbrook, IA, nieces Tonia Hein and Kristi Ingamells and their families, several nieces and nephews, and his German family, Thea, Donald, and Silke and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Hein, his brother, Albert Hein, and his sister, Betty Branum.
