Lanny Cowell
Lanny J. Cowell, 82, a pioneering figure in the insurance industry and a long-time area businessman, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 24, 2024. He was born on May 20, 1942, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Joseph William and Phyllis Jane (Reckard) Cowell. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1960, where he was a stand-out athlete. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 2024, at Platte Woods United Methodist Church. Visitation 12:00pm with a funeral service commencing at 2:00pm. Burial will be November 5, at 11:30 am, at the new Parkville Cemetary at Creekside.
Lanny's insurance career began in the early 1960s in Marshalltown, Iowa and eventually led him to Kansas City. His career included time at Federated and Woodsmall, before starting Cowell Insurance Group in 1989. His passion, dedication and innovation transformed the landscape of insurance, leading to the development of Missouri Rural Services Worker’s Compensation Insurance Trust in 1992.
He was still involved until the day of his passing with Cowell James Forge Insurance Group where he held the positions of Chairman and CFO. Throughout his career, Lanny was known for his integrity solidifying his legacy as a respected leader. His contributions to the field were recognized with numerous awards and accolades.
Besides being everyone’s best friend, Lanny’s passion for life extended beyond his work. He married Karin Hunt in 2001, and they loved life at their home on the lake where they enjoyed watching nature in their back yard. He looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada, gardening, tending to his orchard, canning, and making apple pies with family and friends. His passion was watching Iowa Hawkeyes sporting events while talking to his brother Rodney ,his sons and friends. Recently, he returned from his yearly reunion with his hometown grade school friends. He loved going to lunch daily and being surrounded by “his people”.
Beyond his professional achievements, Lanny was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Karin Hunt Cowell, children Sky Lynn Timm (Tom) of Marshalltown, IA; Lance J. Cowell (Maggie)of Leawood, KS; Todd E. Cowell (Kristin) of Overland Park, KS; Tanya J. Rees of Leawood, KS; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother Rodney (Dianne). He is also survived by his former wives Penny Youngblood and Joan Cowell. Lanny was known for his warm smile and generous spirit. He will be missed by many.
