Melvin Dostal
Melvin Dostal, age 91, of Marshalltown, Iowa, rejoined his loving wife and daughter on the morning of December 14, 2024 at Glenwood Place in Marshalltown, Iowa under the care of Suncrest hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin will be held on Monday, December 23, 2024 beginning at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Henry Church in Marshalltown. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Melvin’s name may be directed to Suncrest Hospice or Glenwood Place in Marshalltown. Melvin Frank Dostal was born April 10, 1933 in Clutier, Iowa. He was the second youngest of five children born to Emil and Julia Dostal. Melvin grew up in Clutier, Iowa where he attended school and later graduated from Clutier High School in 1950. He joined the United States Armed Forces where he honorably served.
Melvin was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Rosalie Chrudimsky on August 25, 1952 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier, Iowa. Following his discharge from the service, he attended the Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where he would eventually receive his Bachelor’s Degree. He furthered his education receiving a Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. They raised four children, Susan, Sandra, Kris and Brian. They resided in New Hampton until 1964. From there they moved their family to Marshalltown where Melvin taught high school chemistry and physics before transitioning to Marshalltown Community College in the vocational technical program and retiring at the age of 59 in 1992. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Henry Church, the Marshalltown Noon Lions Club where he spent time as a district governor and the Marshalltown Knights of Columbus. In his free time, he enjoyed working on his flower gardens, playing games of bridge with friends, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, working on the farm and loving on his beagle Tucker. In his younger years, he and his family have memories of camping trips together and he enjoyed going for runs. He was generous with giving back to his school that got him his education start and was a donor to the UNI Physics Program. Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his children, Susan (Don) Sears of Clive, IA, Sandy (Rich) Nauman of Des Moines, IA and Brian (Suzette) Dostal of Cedar Rapids, IA; his grandchildren, Molly (Todd) Douglas, Josh (Sarah) Nauman, Maggie (Stephen) Dorweiler, Beth (Wade) Judge, Ross (Jodi) DeVolder, Mitchell (Sarah) Dostal, Grant (Lauren) Dostal, Noah (Sam) Dostal and Drew Dostal; nine great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren alongside numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Dostal; his daughter, Kris (Rick) DeVolder; his parents, Emil and Julia Dostal; and his siblings, Charles Dostal, Joe Dostal, Pauline Stodala and Ruth Raymond.
