Jerry was born on May 27, 1934, in Alden, IA to Dan and Ives (Akers) Miller. He was the 4th of 5 children and was the “surprise twin” to his sister Joyce. He graduated from Conrad High School in 1952. He attended McPherson College in McPherson KS for 1 year. His dream of becoming a veterinarian was cut short when his father’s illness brought him back to Conrad. He married the love of his life, Barbara Stanley, on June 5, 1955. He proposed to her on Twinkle Hill, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage. Shortly after the wedding, he was drafted and proudly served his country in the United States Army stationed at Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Jerry had a true servant’s heart and was active in his community in multiple organizations. He was a lifelong member and leader in the Conrad United Methodist Church, and you could hear his beautiful tenor voice from the choir loft. He was actively involved in Boy Scout leadership and a member of the American Legion Post 681. Jerry was an industrious jack of all trades and could fix anything. He once toted home wood from a fallen barn to create an addition to the family castle, and he kept his six little helpers busy straightening nails for weeks. His work career included Lynk’s Hybrids, Kibby Hardware, and Bob’s Farm Center. His fondest years were spent working with Bob Lutes and the farm center family. After retirement, he spent 20 years delivering medications for NuCara Pharmacy. You probably saw him driving around town in his little red pickup truck, sporting his ever-present overalls, hat, and smile. Jerry never met a stranger, and everyone who knew him either liked or loved him. He also never knew a leftover food he wouldn't put on a sandwich, and he was never known to leave a darn thing on the plate at the end of a meal. He was a man of substance, storytelling, laughter, and smiles.
The family wishes to thank the Staff at Bickford of Marshalltown for the amazing, compassionate, and loving care they provided Jerry.
