Lois Brown

Lois Luaine Whittle-Swope-Brown, 93, of Marshalltown, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services for Lois will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Marshalltown. Lois Luaine Whittle was born on June 12, 1931 in Iberia, Missouri. She was the daughter of Olia Rayford Whittle and Frances “Fanny” Jane Luttrell. Lois was united in marriage to Franklin Dean Swope in 1948. They had four children together: Diana Lynne (Kirby) (Jerry) Spick, Sharon Elaine (Dave) (Sonny Ball) Swope, James Brian (Jody Brintnall) Swope and Michael Blaine (Tracy) (Margie) (Solidad) Swope. Along with her children, Lois will be remembered by her ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and sister-in-law: Delores Whittle along with many nieces and nephews.

Lois worked briefly at Ella’s Tea Room in Marshalltown and later at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital in respitory and physical therapy. After leaving the hospital, Lois married Richard Brown and they traveled around the United States and Mexico for about eight years. Later, Lois started an assisted living business named after the middle names of her mother and father, called the Rayford Jane House which she ran for about thirteen years. After retiring, Lois moved back to Marshalltown to be with her grandchildren. Music was a big part of her life and special memories where made with the family. She could strike up a conversation with anyone wherever she would go. Lois was very loving and compassionate and was always aware of other people’s feelings. She was a member of Central Christian Church and the First Congregational Church in Marshalltown as well as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Lois is preceded in death by her daughter, Diana, parents Olia and Frances and siblings: Hazel Irene (Ralf) Thomas, Verner Talbert (Annette) Whittle, Farris Earl (Leona)(Donna) Whittle, Gail Harding (Shirley) Whittle, Harold Eugene (Beryl) Whittle, Granville Junior (Del) Whittle, James Lee (Ruby) Whittle and Nina Marie (Floyd) (Sonny) Jacobs.
