Randy Brown

Randy LaRoy Brown, 68, of Garwin, Iowa, formerly of Collins, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Services for Randy will take place on Friday, January 31 at 11:00 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Seth Hedman officiating. He will be laid to rest at Maple Hill Cemetery in Montour. A visitation will be held one hour prior at 10:00 A.M. Friends and family are also invited to join Randy's family following burial at the Eagle's Lodge, 112 E 3rd St., in Tama. Randy LaRoy Brown was born on August 24, 1956 in Grundy Center, Iowa. He was the son of Rosemary (Culshaw) Benda and Raymond Brown. After graduating from South Tama County High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country from 1974 to 1978 as Sergeant in the 4thInfantry. During his service, he completed basic training at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, and was stationed in Hardheim, Germany and in El Paso, Texas.

Randy and his previous wife had three daughters- Kimberly in 1973, Genesis in 1978 and Randi in 1981. Upon Randy’s completion of service, he returned to Tama and owned and operated Brown Extermination Co.

Randy was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cheryl Sumpter, on August 18, 1984 at the Tama County Courthouse. Together they started their home in Collins, and had two children- Brandee in 1988 and Christian in 1992.

Randy was incredibly hard-working and dedicated himself to several careers during his working years. He was known as the “Collins Town Man” while working alongside the mayor as superintendent from 1986 to 1993. He was also the Collins Fire Captain and managed the water treatment company in Collins. Randy went on to work at Meskwaki Casino as the Marketing Director, dedicating 27 years before his retirement.

Randy’s hobbies included fishing, amateur photography and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes football team and women’s basketball team. He was also a history buff, lifelong concert-goer, and an excellent cook. Randy loved watching football with Christian and traveling.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 40 years, Cheryl; his five children: Kimberly (Gary) Cournoyer, Genesis (Brad) Steffens, Randi (Cody) Reeves, Brandee Brown and Christian Brown (Kelci Beaty); nine grandchildren: Riley Cournoyer, Leah and Ezra Steffens, Bradley, Cody II, Lincoln LaRoy and Lilah Reeves, Emrie Sager and Leon LaRoy Brown; three sisters: Joelyne “Weiner” (Donnie) Stackhouse of Green Mountain, and Julie Taylor and Becky (Jeff) Stephenson, both of Tama; and several nieces and nephews.

Randy is preceded in death by his father Raymond LaRoy Brown, his mother Rosemary Benda, brother Terry Brown and brother-in-law Dave Taylor.
