Christopher “Fritz” Polt

Christopher “Fritz” Polt, 54, died Sunday, March 9, 2025, with his wife, Theresa, and his family at his bedside, following a courageous battle with brain cancer at Southridge Specialty Care Center in Marshalltown, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Christopher will be held on Thursday, March 13 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St Francis of Assisi Parish -St. Henry Church in Marshalltown. Cremation will follow services, with private inurnment to be held in Riverside Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Fritz's name may be directed to the Knights of Columbus Council 966 or to the family for the purchase of a bench at the cemetery. Christopher Roy Polt was born June 2, 1970, at Osmond General Hospital in Osmond, Nebraska. He was the first of five children born to Roger and Lois (Herbolsheimer) Polt, of Pierce, Nebraska, now of Marshalltown. He attended grade school in the area of his birth, and graduated from Audubon (Iowa) High School with the Class of 1988. Fritz went on to attend Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska. He graduated from Wayne State College, located in Wayne, Nebraska, in 1995, with Bachelor of Arts in Sports Information and a minor in Journalism. In the Fall of 1995, he took part in an internship in the Sports Information Department at Iowa State University in Ames. He also interned for USA Today and other sports affiliates in the Fall of 1996. In 1997, he accepted a position as a sports reporter with the Times-Republican in Marshalltown. In 2002, he was the Sports Editor for the North Platte Telegraph in North Platte, Nebraska, and a year later returned to the Times-Republican as the Sports Editor, moving on to the Conrad Record in 2006.

In September 2011, he left the world of journalism and began working as a management trainee for JBS-Marshalltown, landing a job as the Purchasing Manager for the Distribution Center. In 2013 he moved to the plant side of JBS to become the Maintenance Parts Purchaser. After receiving a diagnosis of brain cancer in December 2022, Fritz took a medically required retirement from JBS.

He met his future wife, Theresa Rose (Jorgensen) Holm, of Marshalltown, in November 1996. They were united in marriage on August 30, 2003, in North Platte, Nebraska. From this union Fritz gained a step-daughter, Kristen Clara Holm. They returned to Marshalltown in September of that year, residing there the remainder of their married life.

Following three rounds of chemotherapy and one round of radiation from John Stoddard Cancer Center and Mission Cancer + Blood at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Fritz remained at home until moving to Southridge Specialty Care Center in October 2024.

Fritz was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish-St. Henry Church, and the Marshalltown Knights of Columbus Council 966. In his free time, he enjoyed watching Nebraska Cornhuskers football, Cleveland Guardians baseball (he still called them the Indians), NASCAR racing, and collecting baseball cards along with other sports memorabilia. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and was a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife, Theresa “Terri” Polt; his step-daughter, Kristen of Spirit Lake; his parents, Roger and Lois Polt of Marshalltown; his brothers: Jake (Elise) Polt and their children: Eden, Royston and Vivienne, all of Victoria, Minnesota; Anthony “Tony” (Christy) Polt of Marshalltown; sisters: Amanda (Joe) Haspert and their sons: Henry, George and William, all of Nowthen, Minnesota; and Addie (Ryan) Bane and their children: Ashlyn and Reed, all of Marshalltown. He is also survived by sister-in-law Deborah (Brad) Trickey of State Center and their daughters: Jessica of Ames, and Emily of State Center; brother-in-law Mark Jorgensen of Marshalltown; and sister-in-law Cynthia (Larry) Anderson of Marshalltown and their children: Shelby of Melbourne, Jordan of Des Moines, Jaydon of Marshalltown, and Lacey and Logan of Marshalltown. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Andrew and Cecilia Polt; maternal grandparents Roy and Mary Herbolsheimer; father- and mother-in-law John and Patricia Jorgensen; and numerous aunts and uncles.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Southridge Specialty Care Center for their kindness and care given to Fritz while he was a resident there.
