Overwhelming majority of Americans support proof of citizenship to vote

When I’m out on the road traveling on my 36 County Tour, Iowans tell me their legitimate concerns that illegal immigrants are voting in our elections. It’s a concern that I share as well, and I agree that we must ensure that only American citizens vote in American elections. Secure elections are a vital component of our representative form of government.

A recent Gallup poll found that most Americans agree with the Iowans I meet across all 36 counties in the 4th Congressional District. In fact, an overwhelming 83% of Americans support proof of citizenship to register to vote in our elections. This figure doesn’t surprise me nor the vast majority of Iowans who believe in common sense, but Democrats would have the American people believe that anyone — regardless of legal status — should be allowed to vote. No questions asked.

That’s wrong and it’s why I voted for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act — better known as the SAVE Act — in July.

This legislation — which I co sponsored and supported — would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in American elections and ensure states remove noncitizens from their voter rolls. To 83% of the American people, this is a no-brainer for election integrity. Yet, 198 House Democrats voted against the SAVE Act — letting illegal immigrants vote in our elections and allowing states like California to keep noncitizens on their voter rolls.

That’s not the only commonsense bill that Democrats have opposed. Last year, every single House Democrat voted against the Secure the Border Act — also known as H.R. 2 — which would continue construction on the border wall, restore “Remain in Mexico,” end radical “catch-and-release” policies, and fully fund our border patrol agents at 22,000 strong. It would also overturn the Biden-Harris administration’s reckless executive orders that have allowed drug traffickers, terrorists, and millions of illegal immigrants to pour over our wide-open border. It’s a national security crisis that has only worsened because of President Biden and Vice President Harris’ complete disregard of the law and gross indifference to the safety of our families and communities.

This recent poll confirms that the American people want secure elections and secure borders. Despite liberal obstruction, I’ll keep working to achieve both.
