Reflections, gratitude, and excitement for Marshalltown’s future
As I prepare to transition into the role of Marshalltown Housing and Community Development Director, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve had as the Executive Director of the Marshalltown Central Business District (MCBD) since August 2019. Coming from a leadership role in the child welfare field, I couldn’t have imagined the remarkable people I would meet or the invaluable lessons I would learn along the way.
I stepped into the role of MCBD Executive Director just one year after the tornado that forever changed the landscape of our downtown. My first year presented unprecedented challenges, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the August 2020 derecho. Like, many other communities, our downtown couldn’t operate as usual, requiring creative problem-solving and resilience, but we had an added challenge of not being able to utilize green spaces. These experiences gave me a front-row seat to Marshalltown’s extraordinary strength, collaboration, and determination. Witnessing this community rise above adversity and come together in times of need has been nothing short of inspiring.
One of the aspects I have cherished most about my position with MCBD is the ability to help anyone in the district, regardless of membership or fees. This structure has allowed me to focus on the well-being of the entire district, ensuring that every business, property owner, and stakeholder had access to resources and support when they needed it most. I am proud to have served in a role that prioritizes inclusivity and collaboration, always keeping the downtown community at the forefront.
Looking back, I feel privileged to have been involved in projects that have shaped our downtown and brought our community together. Highlights include updating the Walkable Alleyway, which adds charm and connectivity to our district; the Military Tribute Banners, honoring those who have served our country; the fun-filled Haunt the Block event, which fosters community spirit; and, of course, the beloved Holiday Stroll, which lights up the season with joy and togetherness.
I’m especially proud of transformative projects like the storefront updates for Zamora’s Fresh Market, supported by a Main Street Iowa Challenge Grant, and supporting the catalytic Hopkins Willards project, which revitalized two iconic buildings with upper-story housing and office and retail space. Additionally, the Downtown Revitalization Grant facilitated the transformation of eight storefronts, showcasing the beauty and potential of our downtown while inspiring continued investment and growth.
The acquisition of the mobile bandshell has been another standout project, opening countless possibilities for events and programming that bring people together. I look forward to seeing how MCBD brands the bandshell to enhance the vibrancy and energy of events for years to come.
The Clean Downtown, Bright Future Initiative has been another source of pride, as it partners with Department of Corrections residents to maintain and enhance the beauty of our district. This initiative highlights the power of collaboration and how our community can come together to create meaningful change.
A key strength of MCBD lies in its working board of directors. This is not a board that simply advises — they roll up their sleeves and get things done. Their grassroots approach and excellent stewardship of resources have been essential to ensuring that every dollar and action creates meaningful impact for the district.
Although I am stepping away from my role as Executive Director, I am excited to remain involved with MCBD as the city representative on its Board of Directors in an ex-officio capacity. This continued involvement will allow me to help guide the district through the upcoming streetscape transformation and support the new director as they navigate this critical period of reconstruction. This project will reshape the look and feel of downtown while creating new opportunities for growth and community engagement.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication of the MCBD Board of Directors, downtown business owners, district employees, community partners, and stakeholders who pour their hearts into making Marshalltown a thriving and welcoming place. Revitalization is truly a team effort, and it’s through this collective commitment that we’ve been able to create meaningful and lasting change.
As I transition into my new role, I am eager to join the City of Marshalltown team and contribute to achieving its goals. As Housing & Community Development Director, I will help expand and improve development in the community by addressing housing opportunities and planning for future infrastructure growth. I also look forward to working with citizens, businesses, and organizations to enhance Marshalltown’s public image, eliminate blight, and foster collaborative projects that elevate our quality of life. It is exciting to bring my passion for revitalization and community building into this broader role, working toward a vibrant and welcoming Marshalltown.
Whoever follows in my footsteps as the next MCBD Executive Director will be privileged to work with such an extraordinary group of people. I look forward to seeing how they find their groove, flourish in the role, and bring fresh ideas to continue building on our momentum.
While change can be uncertain, it also brings opportunities for growth and fresh perspectives. As I step into my new role, I remain committed to serving Marshalltown with gratitude, humility, and collaboration. To everyone who has supported me along the way–thank you. Your encouragement and partnership have been a constant source of inspiration. Together, we can build on our shared successes and ensure Marshalltown thrives as a community that welcomes progress and celebrates its people.
