Tollefson wins Alliance title with a pool record

There’s only two boxes left for Marshalltown senior diver Abby Tollefson to check, and Tuesday’s performance at the Iowa Alliance Conference meet made them both a distinct possibility.
Tollefson achieved a new school and pool record with her 11-dive total of 588.45 points, crowning her as conference champion in a meet that was moved from Des Moines Lincoln to Marshalltown late last week.
Fellow Bobcat Kate Hauser, a junior, claimed the runner-up spot as well with her personal-record score of 410.30, but Tollefson’s eye-popping total took the headlines from this night.
It wasn’t that far off the state record, either.
Tollefson’s personal-best mark of 588.45 was just 8.8 points off the state record established by Jayna Misra of Ames in 2018. Misra was a two-time state champion who now dives at Iowa State.
Tollefson has one last shot at a state title after finishing 28th, fourth and second in her previous three attempts.
Both the state record and state diving championship are on the table for Tollefson as indicated by Tuesday’s results.
Bobcat sophomore Olivia Ver Steeg emerged from the conference meet with 11th place after a scoring total of 158.85.
The swimming portion of the Alliance meet is Thursday in Ames.
