SPORTS SHORTS: No. 15 Trojans track down ninth win in a row
VINTON — The Class 3A No. 15 West Marshall softball team scored its ninth win in a row thanks to a fast start in Thursday’s 8-3 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg.
The Trojans (10-1) scored six runs in the top of the first inning and led the entire way.
Jillian Karsjens went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the West Marshall offense, which racked up 11 hits in the win. Amelia Ranson was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, and Aubree Greenwood was 2-for-4. Rachel Randall singled, scored and drove in two runs, and winning pitcher Taylor Thomas had an RBI single.
In the circle, Thomas scattered 10 hits and two walks over seven innings for the win. She struck out six.
Collins-Maxwell rallies past Comets in nine innings
CONRAD — Class 1A No. 11 Collins-Maxwell staved off its second loss of the season by scoring once in the seventh inning and twice more in the top of the ninth to defeat BCLUW 7-5 in Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.
BCLUW (6-4, 5-2) held a 5-4 lead going into the seventh, but Collins-Maxwell (8-1, 8-0) made sure it wasn’t the last inning. The Spartans scored to tie the game before winning in the second extra frame.
Six different players had one hit each for BCLUW. Cassie Nason singled, scored twice and drove in a run, while Klayre Gallentine singled and drove in a run. Grace Farnsworth singled and scored.
Gallentine took the loss in the circle, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and five walks while striking out five.
Spartan softball stumps AGWSR, 10-0 in five
ACKLEY — The Grundy Center softball team sent AGWSR (1-9, 0-4) to its fifth straight loss, topping the Cougars 10-0 in five innings in Thursday’s NICL West Division contest.
Kyndra Dieken was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in support of Ava Mundt, who struck out five and walked three in a one-hitter.
Carlie Willis, Lucy Lebo and Allison Koch each had two of the Spartans’ 13 singles. Camdyn Aronson and Ava Heeren both singled and drove in two runs for the Spartans (5-7, 1-3).
Jirovsky cruises, Grundy Center stomps Cougars
ACKLEY — Grundy Center baseball got its third straight win without much contestation, beating AGWSR 11-0 in five innings here Thursday night.
The Spartans (6-2, 3-2) scored at least one run in each of their five at-bats in support of Tate Jirvosky, who pitched a two-hit shutout. Jirovsky struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.
Ryker Thoren was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Judd Jirovsky was 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Brody Zinkula tripled and scored twice, while Ryder Slifer doubled and drove in a pair. Pete Lebo singled, scored twice and had two RBIs in the NICL West Division win over the Cougars (2-9, 2-3).
MCC hosting girls basketball camp
Marshalltown Community College is hosting a basketball camp for girls going into grades 1-6. The camp runs June 10-13 from 10 a.m. to noon and costs $40 per camper.
Campers will learn from MCC coaches and players to improve skills in dribbling, passing, defense, ball handling, shooting and more.
