SPORTS SHORTS: Scarlets take softball slugfests over Marshalltown

DES MOINES — The Des Moines East softball team outslugged Marshalltown in a doubleheader sweep, beating the Bobcats 14-8 and 10-8 on Wednesday night.

The Scarlets (3-10) hit two home runs in the first game and another in the second, totalling 25 hits in the twinbill. Marshalltown (3-7) amassed 21 hits, but came up just short in the slugfest.

Laney Danielson was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead MHS in the first game. Karsyn Price took the loss, allowing 12 runs — 10 earned — on 12 hits and three walks. Hanna Osgood pitched an inning of relief.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats rallied to take an 8-7 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth, but East answered with three runs for the eventual victory. Hits by Aubree Mundt, Bella Avise, Kate Sandvick, and Laney and Briley Danielson gave MHS the lead, but the ‘Cats couldn’t keep it.

Briley took the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits and three walks, striking out one. Avise, Mundt, the Danielsons and Gianna Baune had two hits apiece to lead Marshalltown.

Mustangs outmuscle Denver in softball showdown

LE GRAND — The Class 2A No. 11 East Marshall softball team endured Denver’s last hurrah and the Mustangs won their sixth straight, 4-2, on Wednesday night.

Mylee Thurm singled and Jenna Collins hit a two-run home run to start the top of the seventh for Denver (3-5), which had just one hit before its last at-bat. East Marshall hurler Morgan Neuroth struck out two of the next three batters she faced to finish it.

Neuroth singled and scored on Rayne McIlrath’s double in the bottom of the first, and McIlrath came across on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs (9-2) the early edge, 2-0.

Makayla Kerber walked and scored on a Vaeda Bryan double, and McIlrath plated Bryan with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 Mustangs in the third.

Neuroth was in cruise control until the seventh, allowing one hit and one walk over the first six frames. She finished with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Bryan had two hits to lead the Mustangs.

Thomas leads Trojans past Lynnville-Sully

STATE CENTER — Taylor Thomas pitched a four-hitter and the West Marshall softball team took down Lynnville-Sully, 7-1, on Tuesday night.

The sophomore Thomas walked two, hit a batter and struck out six in the win. The Trojans (8-1) supported her with 13 hits, including two apiece for Lillian Fischer, Josie deNeui and Lily Zahnd. Jenna Randall added a triple and Aubree Greenwood hit a double.

Redhawks romp past Baxter, 19-7

BAXTER — The North Tama softball team had three big innings en route to a 19-7, five-inning triumph over Baxter on Monday night.

Adelyn Sienknecht was 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run and five RBIs to lead the Redhawk offense. Addison Hochstetler also had three hits and an RBI, while Gabrielle Seda, Gabby Velasco and Harper Rausch had two hits apiece.

North Tama (3-3) also benefited from 10 walks issued by Baxter pitching and 11 errors by the Bolts (0-7).

Sienknecht earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out seven. The Redhawks backed her with six runs in the second inning, eight in the fourth and five in the fifth.
